Charles Lee Gerald, 36, turned himself in to authorities Thursday evening.
Investigators say he beat his son with a twisted drop cord after learning that the child had gotten in trouble at school.
Detectives say someone at the child's school reported the boy's injuries after noticing him limping.
Gerald is charged with child abuse. He was released from jail on a $5,000 bond.
