"I'm very excited about the opportunity to serve on board submarines," Bittner said. "Men have been doing it since the beginning of the sub force and it was always one of those things that the door was closed to females."
Bittner comes from a military family. Her father, Lawrence, served on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was aboard the Eisenhower during its first deployment with women.
