Officials look to communities for gang prevention

RALEIGH

A gang prevention forum will be held 6 p.m. at Wake Chapel Church on Tarheel Club Road in Raleigh.

Officials hope to get input from the community on how to prevent gangs from popping up and to curb current gang activity.

Gangs are on the rise across the state. There are 97 gangs in Wake County -- second to the Charlotte area, according to the latest annual report from the Governor's Crime Commission.

What to do about those numbers is the question.

The Town of Knightdale held several town hall meeting in 2007 after graffiti starting appearing everywhere. Officials say that's when they became concerned.

Knightdale isn't the only town that will attend tonight's forum. Zebulon and Wendell are co-sponsors. Law enforcement officials all will attend. They too hope the community can provide insight into getting rid of gangs.
