SWAT called to Durham standoff

DURHAM

A SWAT team was called to a home on Kirby Street near Rockford Road around 2:30 a.m.

Authorities used tear gas and a man who was inside escaped to the roof via the home's attic. The suspect sat on the roof for several hours while negotiators tried to talk him down. He did not appear to have any weapons and was by himself sitting in a pair of shorts and no shirt.

The incident ended around 8:15 a.m. when the man came down. ABC11 Eyewitness News was on the scene and officers could be seen assisting the man off the roof.

Police have not said why they were called to the house or why the man refused to come down off the roof.

Police have not released the suspect's name or said what charges, if any he will face.
