New Hanover announced its decision Wednesday - naming Tim Markley of Catawba County to the job.
Hargens was one of three finalist candidates.
Hargens was appointed to Wake's interim position in April, a job she conducts in addition to her role as the system's Chief Academic Officer.
Prior to assuming her role as Chief Academic Officer, she served as an assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent in Wake County.
