Smith convicted of shooting girlfriend

RALEIGH

Smith admitted shooting and killing his live-in girlfriend last year, but his attorney claimed she had a problem with alcohol, violence and was suicidal.

Attorney Karl Knudson used an unusual 'suicide by boyfriend' defense, urging jurors to find Smith guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and arguing Gore taunted Smith to shoot her.

Instead, the jury came back with a verdict of first-degree murder Wednesday afternoon.

He was sentence to life in prison without parole.
