Mother speaking out about fatal boat accident

HOPE MILLS Brandon Godfrey, 21, was tubing on Lake Jocassee when the rope pulling his inner tube wrapped around his neck.

"The rope got wrapped around Brandon's neck," Godfrey's mother Melinda Coleman said. "The first thing he said was, 'I'm pretty sure it crushed his windpipe and he died instantly.'"

The medical examiner says Godfrey's death was a tragic accident and alcohol was not a factor.

Meanwhile, Godfrey's mother says she is concerned about the popular sport's safety regulations.

"I have no idea of the safety regulations," Coleman said. "I have tried to find some of them online. They're difficult and they vary from state-to-state from what I can find so far."

She says she just doesn't want another mother to suffer a loss like her's.

"He was very charming and that was genuine," said Coleman about her son. "He loved his friends … he was fiercely loyal. I can't imagine ever having closure. It will help me to know that those regulations are examined. But closure for the loss of my son, that's not ever going to happen."
