Eyewitness said it sounded like the plane was having engine trouble before it spiraled into the woods. It is not known at this time the exact cause of the crash, but the pilot is reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Rescue crews say the pilot was flown to UNC Hospital on the TarHeel with multiple injuries. His condition is not known but crews say he appeared to be alert and was talking.
Authorities have secured the scene of the crash, and are waiting to begin an investigation into what happened.
