The vote could have an impact on Wake County schools.
Newcomer Matthews, who will replace District 2 Commissioner Lindy Brown, told ABC11 Eyewitness News Tuesday night that he supports the Wake County School Board majority's plan for community schools.
On his website, Matthews says he will "work with the Wake County School Board to insure the children of Wake County get the quality education they need to get ahead in life. I will pay close attention to the concerns of the parents of our school children as we set our priorities. We can work together to make our school system even better."
Incumbents District 3 Commissioner Gurley and District 1 Commissioner Bryan were originally elected in 2002 and later re-elected in 2006.
District 7 Commissioner Coble was also elected in 2006.
