The agency says the plant lost cooling to a reactor core while performing a maintenance test on the main generator relay panel.
The reactor's safety systems responded as expected and cooling was restored within three minutes.
Operated by Progress Energy, Shearon Harris is located near New Hill - close to Jordan Lake. It began producing electricity in 1987 and generates power for 550,000 homes.
