Officer involved in Christmas shooting

ROCKY MOUNT

Alphonso Moore was arrested and then taken to Nash General Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.

A Rocky Mount Police spokesperson said the incident began when an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Stallings Oil Company on 301 South around 1 a.m.

As the officer investigated, the vehicle fled away at a high rate of speed. A pursuit led the officers to 518 Dexter Street where they say Moore drove around the house and backed onto the street where officers were almost run over by his vehicle.

One of the officers opened fire, striking the vehicle and Moore. Moore continued to flee by vehicle until he crashed into a tree in front of 649 Raleigh Road. Moore continued to flee on foot and was apprehended within the 600 block of Raleigh Road

The SBI is now helping with the investigation. The officer is now on routine desk duty while the investigation is completed.

Police said Moore will be charged with multiple traffic offenses, damage to property as well as attempted felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill upon his release from the hospital.
