They say two other men were also shot in the residence.
Witnesses to the crime apparently tried to pursue the suspect vehicle, which was last seen in the area of Highway 48 and U.S. 158 in Roanoke Rapids.
Officials are not releasing any more details, and there is no word if any suspects have been identified.
