Raleigh approves smoking ban in parks

RALEIGH

Supporters say the ban would eliminate second-hand smoke and keep litter out of public areas.

Detractors say it would take away a smoking citizen’s right to enjoy the parks they pay taxes to support.

Changes to the ordinance passed last month mean:

  • Moore and Nash park will not be included in the restriction.
  • Smoking will be allowed in parking lots.
  • Ordinance will ban smoked products not smokeless tobacco products.
  • Containers for buds will be placed in parking lots.

The ordinance will take effect July 1.

Boone, Asheville and Buncombe County have all passed similar outdoor smoking bans.
