Authorities in Wilmington were called to an explosion at the LV Sutton Steam Electric Plant off Highway 421 in New Hanover County Tuesday morning.A Progress Energy spokesperson says the explosion happened around 9 a.m. in one of the plant's three coal-fired units that was offline for repair work.

Cory Rogers, 24, a technician at the Progress Energy plant was killed while performing maintenance on the unit.

Officials say there was not a major fire at the plant and no evacuations were issued for the surrounding area.

The 600-megawatt Sutton Plant includes three coal units built in 1954, 1955 and 1972.

In 2009, Progress Energy announced its plan to retire the Sutton Plant's three coal-fired units and build a 620-MW combined-cycle power plant at the Sutton site. The new plant is scheduled to begin operating in 2014.
