Explosion kills worker at electric plant

WILMINGTON A Progress Energy spokesperson says the explosion happened around 9 a.m. in one of the plant's three coal-fired units that was offline for repair work.

Cory Rogers, 24, a technician at the Progress Energy plant was killed while performing maintenance on the unit.

Officials say there was not a major fire at the plant and no evacuations were issued for the surrounding area.

The 600-megawatt Sutton Plant includes three coal units built in 1954, 1955 and 1972.

In 2009, Progress Energy announced its plan to retire the Sutton Plant's three coal-fired units and build a 620-MW combined-cycle power plant at the Sutton site. The new plant is scheduled to begin operating in 2014.
