Officer injured in scuffle with suspect

RALEIGH It happened just after midnight, when the officer -- Master Officer E. Comacho -- pulled over a driver on Rock Quarry Road near Davie and Tarboro streets.

According to investigators, Officer Comacho noticed the driver -- 51-year-old Cornelius Thompson -- hiding something as he approached Thompson's truck.

When the officer tried the get Thompson out of the truck, there was a struggle and Thompson started to drive off. Officer Comacho got tangled up in the seat belt and was dragged a short distance as the vehicle drove away.

He was able to free himself, return to his cruiser and follow the truck.

Thompson led officials on a slow speed chase through Raleigh into Garner, ending at Thompson's home on Spanish Moss Lane and NC-50.

Authorities say cocaine was found in Thompson's truck and in his house.

He has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, speeding to allude and possession of cocaine.

Thompson is currently being held in the Wake County Jail under a $75,000 bond.

Officer Comacho sustained some scratches and bruises during the scuffle and is expected to be okay.
