Police captain suspended for school bus violation

SMITHFIELD

Police say Captain Bruce Gentry passed a stopped school bus with its stop arm extended in December 2010. The NC Highway Patrol charged him for that violation and he went to trial on April 19, 2011.

He was found guilty. The Smithfield PD conducted its own investigation and decided to take several disciplinary actions against Gentry.

The department placed him on unpaid suspension from April 25 through May 1, he is required to complete a driver safety course at his own expense, he's restricted from operating town owned vehicles for 30 days effective May 2, and he's suspended from taking home a department owned vehicle for 30 days -- effective if and when the take home policy is reinstated. The policy is currently suspended due to budgetary restraints.

According to the Smithfield PD website, Gentry is the patrol commander for the department.
