Sheriff's spokesman Debbie Tanna said initial reports said that Boykin also had been killed, but that Cape Fear Valley Medical officials later informed police that he is alive.
Boykin was listed in critical conditon Sunday night.
Police say both men were involved in gunfire at a Cumberland County home.
Police are still investigating and have not determined who the shooter was.
