Woman killed, soldier injured in Fayetteville shooting

FAYETTEVILLE

The soldier, 46-year-old Michael Lloyd Williams was taken to the hospital.

Williams was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg and had been involved in a seven year relationship with 24-year-old Stephanie Thompson.

Police say a co-worker called 911 Thursday and asked that an officer check on the couple.

"Officers arrived and made entry into the home and found two people inside. One deceased female was dead. The man was transported to Cape Fear Valley Hospital," said Gavin MacRoberts with Fayetteville Police.

Thompson's cousin said she suspected the worse when she heard something had happened.

"I knew she was murdered," Kenyana Thompson said.

She was worried something like this would happen.

"I been telling her to come live with me until she could get back to Michigan," Kenyana said.

However, Stephanie never made the move.

Kenyana says her cousin and Williams were having domestic violence problems.

"They had just had a problem like a month ago," she said.

Police aren't saying when they think the shooting happened, but Kenyana says she hadn't heard from her cousin in four days.

"Her phone has been busy since Sunday, so I don't know when it happened," she added.

The couple was not married, but lived together. They have two children who were not at home when the shooting happened because they are in Michigan with relatives. Those relatives are on their way to Fayetteville.

Police say there was no sign of forced entry into the apartment and they are not searching for suspects. Investigators did recover a handgun, but haven't said who pulled the trigger, or why.

Williams remains hospitalized in critical condition.
