Fort Bragg undergoing massive deployment

FORT BRAGG They're known as the Falcon Brigade. Members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team have already started its deployment to Iraq for the close out phase of what's being called Operation New Dawn.

"We've been deploying over the last couple of weeks," Deputy Commanding Officer Col. Tim Kehoe said. "We've got folks in theater today working hard to get prepared for the mission taking over from 4th Brigade 3rd Infantry Division."

Kehoe says his unit is no stranger to Iraq. This deployment is the 2nd Brigade's ninth since it first deployed with very little notice to begin the war against terrorism in 2001.

"Yes and that's something that we've talked about a lot in the Brigade Combat Team is that the amount of work and the sacrifices made by this Brigade," Kehoe said. "It's fitting that we start this thing of and we go back in and close it out."

The war has been costly for members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. There have been several soldiers from the unit who gave their lives in defense of our country.

About 3,500 soldiers will be shipping off between now and Memorial Day. Kehoe says it's significant that the unit is deploying on another mission this weekend.

"And we don't lose sight of that, that's part of the importance of this mission," Kehoe said. "That we honor all those that came before us who paid the ultimate sacrifice and that we will close the mission out in Iraq with great honor."
