I-40 on-ramp closes after bus bursts into flames

WAKE COUNTY DOT cameras along I-40 captured images of the burning bus on the on-ramp to I-40 westbound from Rock Quarry Road around 6:30 a.m.

Wake County Schools spokesperson Michael Evans tells ABC11 that the bus, which is affiliated with the school system, had just left the transportation facility on Rock Quarry Road when the bus driver noticed the vehicle was on fire. No one else was on board the bus at the time. The driver was not injured.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, flames were already stretching several feet into the air along the driver's side of the bus.

Crews were able to put out the blaze after a few minutes, but not before the bus sustained significant damage.

Authorities had to close the I-40 ramp to drivers as they worked to clear the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
