Robert Dennis Learn, 64, of Santa Gertonrudis Drive, Clayton, worked for the school district from October 2006 to October 2010 when the alleged incidents occurred.
He worked as a substitute teacher at Clayton Middle, Archer Lodge Middle, Cleveland High, and West Johnston High, according to Terri Sessoms, public information officer for Johnston County Schools.
The alleged crimes occurred when the child was 11 and ended when she was 15, according to Tammy Amaon, public information officer with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the incidents were not related to Learn's employment with Johnston County Schools.
Learn is charged with five counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, three counts of attempted first-degree sex offense, and one count of statutory rape.
Learn was in the Johnston County jail Friday. Bond was set at $850,000.
