Officials at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced Monday that one of their top starters has been dismissed from the football team.

Linebacker Ebele Okakpu was dismissed from the program for conduct detrimental to the team, interim head coach Everett Withers said.

Okakpu, a senior from Roswell, Ga., started in five games this season.

In May, Okakpu was involved in an on-campus car crash that involved three other football players and an UNC police officer, who served as the game day officer for former head football coach Butch Davis. Okakpu was a passenger in the car.

Okakpu is expected to remain on scholarship and graduate in 2012.
