Durham daycare shut down

DURHAM

Durham police said Tara Alston, 41, and Michael Christopher Thomas, 38, both of Oakmont Avenue, are charged with running an illegal child care facility. Bonds for Alston and Thomas were set at $3,000. Both have posted bond.

According to police, 11 children, some as young as toddlers, were cared for at the in-home daycare. Investigators were led to the home by a tip and when they arrived, they said the woman who runs the daycare would not allow them to enter.

ABC11 spoke to Alston who said she lost her license last year. She said the children she was caring for are relatives.

ABC11 also obtained documents from the Division of Child Development explaining why the daycare was shut down last year. The operator was accused of providing false information to child care investigators.

She also allegedly transported children from her licensed center to another location where she was providing care without their parent's permission. Finally, she failed to list that second location under the license she had.
