Hundreds brave chill to remember Eve Carson

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Carson was student-body president at UNC when she was murdered in March 2008.

The Eve Carson Memorial 5K run/walk kicked off just after 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Eve Carson Scholarship Fund.

This year's event carried even more meaning - because Saturday would have been Carson's 26th birthday, and because it comes a little more than a week before the second suspect in her murder goes on trial.

"I think it helps to bring a lot of closure to people...people who've been waiting for this moment for a while," said Kara Singsank, one of the event's organizers. "And it kind of brings an end to the whole grieving process, though Eve will definitely continue to be missed."

The trial of Lawrence Lovette is scheduled to start November 28th in Hillsborough. The other suspect - Demario Atwater - took a plea deal last year, and will spend the rest of his life in jail.
