Police: Suspect in triple killing knew victim

FAYETTEVILLE

Detectives initially characterized the incident at 288 Ingram Street as a break-in based on information from a 911 call. But after further investigation, they said 44-year-old Shawn Lee Legrand went to the home, confronted and killed one of the residents, and then shot and/or stabbed others as they came in.

In all, three people died in the attacks and two others were seriously wounded. The three dead were identified as Ardell Paige Jr., 33; Krystle Price Papile, 26; and Gregory Steven Fitzgerald, 37. Paige and Papile were found dead at the scene, while Fitzgerald died after being taken to the hospital.

Stephanie Lashaun Croom, 30; and Bennie Darwin King, 50; were being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Monday.

After getting the call about a break-in at 9:44 a.m. Saturday, police said they got a description of Legrand's car leaving the area just before they got there. Police put out a radio bulletin, and an officer spotted the car near Person Street and attempted to stop it. Officers said Legrand refused to pull over and a chase began. It ended when Legrand hit a fence on C Street. He allegedly got out of the vehicle armed with a handgun and ran. Two officers found him in the backyard of a home and shot him. He was getting treatment at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Monday.

Police said they plan to charge Legrand with three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.

The police officers involved in Legrand's shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending a SBI investigation - which is standard in all police officer involved shootings.

North Carolina prison records show Legrand has a violent past. He spent 23 years in prison for violent crimes before his release in July. Legrand was convicted of assault inflicting serious injury, robbery and burglary for 1987 crimes and had his sentence extended while in prison for another assault with a deadly weapon offense.

Police said they have been able to contact next of kin for all of Legrand's alleged victims with the exception of Krystle Papile.  Anyone with information concerning the location of Papile's family is asked to contact Detective Hardin at (910) 391-2529.
