Hope Mills police chief to step down

HOPE MILLS, N.C.

Robert Hassell is stepping down to take a position with Fayetteville State University. He will be the associate vice chancellor for public safety and police.

Capt. Joel Acciardo, a 20-year veteran with the force, will serve as interim chief while the town searches for Hassell's replacement.

Town manager Randy Beeman says the resignation is a great loss for Hope Mills.

"It is devastating to the town of hope mills because he has done so much in working with the town," said Beeman.

Hassell's last day at his current job will be Jan. 13
