The driver remains at-large, and one other person is hospitalized, while the family of Weldon Williams begins to plan their lives without him.
"It really hurt in the heart. It really did. It's like someone drove a nail," his wife Olean Williams said.
Police said Williams was driving one of two cars involved in the wreck that happened on Driver Street and Angier Avenue.
A 2010 black Ford Edge rental SUV with New Jersey plates ran a red light while speeding and crashed into a Suzuki. The impact caused the Suzuki to crash into the Cadillac that Williams was driving, according to police.
Police said the driver of the rental SUV took off on foot, leaving Williams and another person critically injured.
Williams later died at the hospital.
His family told ABC11 he was a devoted leader at his church and a role-model as a husband and father.
"The legacy that he passes to me and my side of the family is that he was a caretaker and that he taught us to care for one another and family and the Lord are the first things in your life," Williams' great niece Nina Hines said.
He is described as black male in his early 20s, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and 145 to 160 pounds. He had a light to medium complexion and was wearing his hair in dreadlocks. Police say he may frequent the Walltown area.
Police are offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.
