The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Hyde Park Avenue in Durham.
Police said the 4-year-old boy opened the door while his mom was backing up.
He fell out of the SUV onto the driveway and suffered scrapes and bruises.
He was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
