Grieving daughter tired of headstone delays

FAYETTEVILLE

"It has been a very traumatic, emotional ordeal for us, because this was the very last thing that we could do for our mother. That we couldn't get closure that we couldn't move on," Knox said. "It was really bad, I felt like I failed my mother."

Knox's mother, Lillie James, passed away in September. Shortly after her passing, Knox ordered a headstone from Quality Monuments in Fayetteville.

"She said it would be in for her birthday, which was December 10, because we were planning a big memorial -- family coming in for the holidays and we were planning this for her birthday," Knox said. "So she assured me it would be here."

However, come the memorial, Knox said the owner of Quality Monuments told her the manufacturer was having problems and the headstone wouldn't be ready in time.

"So I said, 'ok, we'll adjust' and we just put flowers out there," Knox said. "She assured me that it would be here for Christmas, on December 25."

Christmas came and went and still no headstone for her mom's grave. Knox said she went to Quality Monuments more than two dozen times to get the headstone.

"I constantly stayed on this and she just would not do right," Knoz said. "She had the money, she would not give us the headstone, she would not cooperate in any way until WTVD 11 got involved."

I got in touch with the owner of Quality Monuments and she admitted it had taken longer than expected to get the headstone.

She said one of the reasons was because of the pink granite Knox wanted for the headstone is not common or easy to get. She also added she has gone through some rough times the last couple of months and was slowly getting things back in order.

The owner assured me the headstone would be in within a few weeks and she would make it right.

She followed through; Lillie James' headstone is now down.

"Mama we did it, we got it," Knox said. "Now you can rest in peace."

Knox added that she finally has closure.

"Without you, we would not be standing here today; we would not have this headstone," she said. "With all my heart, myself, my entire family, my mother, thank you so much."
