NCCU academic restructuring approved

DURHAM

Fourteen academic programs are being eliminated, restructured or merged.

The Colleges of Science and Technology and Liberal Arts will merge to form the College of Arts and Sciences. Two new degree programs will also be established. A new department of mass communications will also be added as well.

"The approval by the Board of Governors means we can shift from planning to implementation," NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms said in a statement. "We remain committed to providing high-quality education and retaining and graduating students while responding to the economic challenges facing all academic institutions. This new structure deploys our resources in a more strategic fashion. We believe these changes strengthen our academic programming and offerings and position our students for greater success."

The changes are expected to generate about $500,000.

The UNC Board of Governors approved the changes Friday.
