As ABC11 first reported earlier this month, 49-year old Michael Anthony Lee, of 3136 Custer Avenue, was originally charged with assault with a deadly weapon and injury to personal property in the Memorial Day incident.
Truck driver Morris Taylor told ABC11 he was making a run for J and L Environmental down Custer Avenue when he thought a tire blew out. He soon realized it was bullets hitting his vehicle.
Morris got out of his truck and ran for nearby woods, but he said Lee followed him and continued shooting.
"No doubt in my mind. He was trying to kill me," said Morris in a June 1 interview with ABC11.
Neighbors told ABC11 that Lee shoots guns in his yard on a regular basis. However, no one knew why he allegedly started shooting at the truck and its driver.
Authorities arrested Lee on Memorial Day and confiscated three rifles and a handgun. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for an evaluation, but was soon released.
Monday, deputies upgraded the charges against Lee to attempted first-degree murder and four counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
Lee's new bond was set at $35,000 and ABC11 learned that his wife has bailed him out of jail.
His next court date was set for July 2.
