Former SBI assistant director dies

RALEIGH

Bill Dowdy was a life-long highly respected crime investigator who began his career New Bern police department. He became a SBI agent and rose through the ranks.  

Dowdy retired from the SBI in 2000. In 2003, he was hired by Wake District Attorney Colon Willoughby as an investigator.  

Dowdy was diagnosed with colon cancer late last year. He died at Rex Hospital Thursday night according the DA's office.

Friends said Dowdy was a large, physically imposing man known for a gentle spirit. He was always quick with a joke - often about himself - despite a career spent dealing with the darker side of society.  

Dowdy was 69 years old.
