The funeral for Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale is set for Thursday in College Station. The Texas A&M graduate will then be buried in the Aggie Field of Honor, an area of a College Station cemetery for Aggies and their supporters.
Tisdale was fatally wounded last week when Spc. Ricky G. Elder of Kansas shot him and another soldier, who survived. Elder then shot himself and later died.
Army investigators haven't commented on a motive for the shooting, but Elder was reportedly bitter about facing a court marital over robbery charges.
Forty-two-year-old Tisdale had served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
His mother, Linda Tisdale told ABC11 that the reality of her son's death is just now setting in. She was supposed to see her son this Thursday for the first time in threee years, but instead she'll be attending his funeral.
"All those deployments he had, you kind of think there is more of a possibility of this happening then," said Linda, "but not here in the United States."
Now, family and friends are gathering for one final salute. Tisdale's unit at Fort Bragg is also planning a memorial service.
Army CID agents are still investigating the shooting.
