Capt. Billy Shane Stauffer, 46, who is assigned to the 28th Combat Support Hospital at Fort Bragg, was wearing workout clothes and did not have any identification on him. He was identified after his wife reported him missing.
He suffered major leg trauma and head injuries. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Police interviewed the driver of the SUV - a retired soldier - at scene shortly after the accident.
The investigation continues.
