Teen in coma secures Medicaid benefits

SMITHFIELD, N.C.

Freddie Lempe, 18, has been unconscious after suffering a brain injury in a car accident in March 2011. When Freddie turned 18, Medicaid was denied and medical bills have reached the millions.

Lempe's father, Fred, told ABC11 Friday that he has secured Medicaid benefits to cover his son's treatment at WakeMed.

Freddie's father has been fighting to keep legal guardianship of his son after he turned 18.

Troopers said the driver of the car Freddie was a passenger in was speeding, and lost control of her car in wet weather. She walked away from the crash, but Freddie did not.

Fred said he hopes he does not have to go through with a court date at the end of the month.
