Now, it appears a glitch may be to blame for the miscommunication that seems to have left dozens of Wake County families scrambling to get their kids to school Monday.
Dominic DeSantis said he had a good first day of kindergarten at West Lake Elementary School that was after his mom, Michelle, figured out how to get him there.
"The bus didn't come to get me," said Dominic.
Michelle DeSantis said they were at their bus stop about 15 minutes early. According to a letter sent by the school district, Dominic's bus was supposed to arrive at 7:01 a.m. When the bus didn't show up, Michelle said she took matters into her own hands.
"I tried to call transportation and it went right to a voicemail," said Michelle. "So, we put him in the car and drove him to school. The line going to West Lake Elementary and Middle School was 100, 150 deep."
A spokesperson for the Wake County Public School System said the letter the DeSantis family got reflected last year's bell schedule. The error apparently happened when the transportation department updated some information in the system for another group of schools. That update somehow caused the wrong times to be printed for West Lake.
The district says Dominic's pick-up time is 6:43 a.m., but his mom says she was told by the boy's bus driver that it is 6:15 a.m.
The DeSantis family has decided to drive Dominic to school from now on, to avoid any further confusion. Michelle said she's upset with all the changes and is planning to give board members an earful at their next meeting.
"I don't understand it. I don't understand where they came from with all of this and all this changing and it's just not right," she said. "It's not fair to these kids."
The next Wake County School Board meeting is set to take place July 24.
