Around 1 a.m., officials said a truck driving down US 1 in Wake County dumped hot asphalt on the road as it was headed to a construction site. They said they think the driver didn't notice he triggered the switch and kept driving.
Then about a mile down the road, the truck hit a bridge near Friendship Road and overturned.
The driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, but is expected to be okay.
All the northbound lanes of US 1 were closed as DOT crews worked to scrape the asphalt off the road.
Around 5 a.m. crews were able to get the truck upright and the road clear.
