It happened in the area of Ten-Ten Rd near Fanny Brown Rd in Garner before 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators said 77-year-old Ray Owen East and 29-year-old Jeremy Kearney were involved in some kind of incident on the road.
East allegedly followed Kearney into a store parking lot, waved a pellet gun at him, and struck him with a stick.
East was charged with assault.
