Durham car thieves caught on tape

DURHAM

The suspects kept their faces covered with their shirts as they picked the lock of a white Toyota. When the homeowner in Durham's Hope Valley Farms neighborhood woke up, her car was gone.

The tape showed it only took the culprits about five minutes to hotwire the vehicle and drive off. Police have the video and are looking for these suspects.

The homeowner fears this is the work of professional car thieves.

"Within five or ten minutes, your car could be gone," said Michelle Wicker. "Keep full coverage on your car because it's happening. If I didn't have full coverage, I would just be at a loss. At least I'm going to get paid for my car, but this is a bad situation."

There have been about 350 car thefts in Durham so far this year.

Police said they rarely see groups of professional car thieves. They are recommending car alarm systems to deter would-be bandits.
