A maintenance worker made the discovery behind the University Medical Center building on Cumberland Street.
David Munn was shocked when a co-worker called him over to see what he had found. He said it was a pretty gruesome sight.
"Only thing I know about it, it's just a body over there with a skull and her bones," said Munn. "That's' all I know."
The human remains were found in a wooded area. Munn and some other employees were mowing the grass and cleaning up the yard around the building.
Police were called around 3:30 p.m. Homicide detectives and crime scene technicians spent several hours processing the scene.
Munn said he saw an ID with the remains, but didn't get close enough to read it. Police wouldn't comment on what evidence they recovered.
"We are investigating. We need to send the remains off the medical examiner to determine a cause of death and identify the remains," said Gavin MacRoberts, with the Fayetteville Police Department.
Investigators are fairly sure the remains are not Kelli Bordeaux. She is the Fort Bragg medic who has been missing for two-and-a-half months.
"At this point and time it doesn't appear to be Kelli, but that's still one of the questions we are going to have to ask," said MacRoberts.
Police have not said how long they think the remains were there.
