NCCU chancellor announces retirement

DURHAM

Nelms began at NCCU in August 2007.

Nelms is credited with raising admission requirements and academic standards during his tenure, as well as establishing the university's first Ph.D. program in more than 50 years. Nelms oversaw the athletic department's transition from Division II to Division I, and he led the institution while it was rated the number one public HBCU for two consecutive years.

An interim chancellor will be appointed by University of North Carolina General Administration.
