Gas leak forces evacuations, road closures

MORRISVILLE, N.C.

Fire Station One, the Parks and Recreation Administration Offices and the Public Safety and Municipal Services Building/Morrisville Morrisville Chamber of Commerce were cleared out after a gas line break on Town Hall Drive.

Officials said a construction crew operating in the area hit an 8-inch line while trying to install a traffic light for the fire station.

Town Hall Drive from Morrisville-Carpenter Road to Jeremiah Street had to be temporarily closed as crews worked to repair the leak.

No other areas were affected and traffic was rerouted. Around 12:30 p.m., staff at the three buildings were able to return to work and the road was reopened.

Last Thursday, the same area had to be evacuated after PSNC Energy said a contractor hit a two-inch line, causing a gas leak. A crew was able to stop the leak about 30 minutes later.
