Utility truck crashes into tree on I-40

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C.

It happened in the eastbound lanes around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday near New Hope Church Road when the truck apparently blew a tire, left the roadway and then flipped on its side.

The driver was trapped inside for several minutes until rescuers could free him from the wreckage.

He was transported via air ambulance to the UNC Trauma Center in Chapel Hill.

The driver, who has not been identified, was conscious when he was airlifted, but his condition is unknown.

The truck was apparently registered to Traffic Control Devices in Salisbury, N.C.

One lane of traffic was blocked during the rescue operation and then during the removal of the truck.
