The accident happened Monday night on Jenkins Road at U.S. 1 and Stadium Drive in Wake Forest.
Police said around 9:30 p.m., the driver of the moped was hit by a van while trying to cross Capital Boulevard/US 1. According to investigators, the driver -- whose name has not been released -- ran through a red light and was not wearing a helmet.
The man was rushed to WakeMed where he was later died.
No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the van. It is unknown at this time whether alcohol was a contributing factor to the accident.
U.S. 1 was shut down for several hours as authorities worked to clear the scene.
