Bicyclist hit along Interstate 40 in Raleigh

RALEIGH

The accident happened just after 3:30 a.m. along I-40 East at U.S. 1 and Avent Ferry Road toward Jones Franklin Road in Raleigh.

Authorities said the bicyclist -- 44-year-old Marc Mathis -- was struck by a panel truck and was taken to WakeMed with unknown injuries.

According to a wreck report, 33-year-old Kashta Brandon was driving the truck owned by Direct Link Courier out of Greensboro, when he reared Mathis' bike as he rode in the far right lane.

Brandon was reportedly going the speed limit.

At least two eastbound lanes of I-40 had to be closed for hours as authorities worked to clear the scene.
