Neighbors warn of Smithfield fire

SMITHFIELD, N.C.

"Some of the neighbors woke us up saying the house was on fire. We really didn't believe them," said Doris Atkinson.

But Atkinson said they quickly realized that smoke really was pouring out of the back of the one-story brick residence.

"All I can say is thank God we have good neighbors," said Atkinson.

Smithfield and Selma firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within 15 minutes.

Although an official cause of the fire has not been released, it has been ruled accidental. It appears to have started at the back of the home due to some type of electrical problem.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
