Two arrests in Chapel Hill carjacking

CHAPEL HILL

It happened on Gristmill Lane just before 4:30 p.m.

Investigators said the 60-year-old victim was arriving home from her job in Durham when she was knocked to the ground and her car taken.

A neighbor heard the commotion and was able to give police a good description of two suspects who were in custody within the hour.

Now, 21-year-old Marcus Dontae Carpenter of Holloway Street, Durham and 19-year-old Mark Troy Smith of North Duke Street, Durham are charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony common law robbery, and felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

Bond for both was set at $20,000.

Sources said the victim was recovering from broken bones suffered in the assault.
