Wilson police were called to Daniel Street in response to a suspicious person with a weapon on Friday just before 1 a.m.
Officers found a man that fit the description they were looking for and ordered the man to show his hands. The man, identified later as 36-year-old Ed Lee Edwards III, turned and showed a handgun. Edwards fired at officers and one officer returned fire, but Edwards ran from the scene.
No one was injured during the shooting.
A short time later, officers found Edwards sleeping in an apartment on Rountree Street and arrested him.
Edwards was charged with four counts of attempted first degree murder. He was placed in the Wilson County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.
One officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty, pending an investigation. This is normal procedure for an officer involved shooting.
