Contractors who had been working on that area of Wilmington Street since earlier this week, hit a 1 inch gas line around 11 a.m. Witnesses reported hearing a hissing sound of gas leaving the pipes.

The odor of gas prompted evacuations of some nearby buildings. A PSNC spokesperson said the gas line was quickly capped before further evacuations were issued.

The street was blocked off to traffic as crews worked to repair the damage.
