Parents rally behind Tata

RALEIGH

The PTA at one Raleigh school is concerned that the school board could be ready to fire superintendent Tony Tata, and it has launched a campaign to save his job.

"If something is going to happen, it could happen as early as Monday," said Hilburn PTA President Mike Cassetta. "So, we wanted to let parents know today before they, you know, are away for the weekend possibly to take action now."

Cassetta and others at Hilburn learned Friday morning that a group of Wake County School Board members are specifically holding a personnel meeting on Monday to talk about removing Tata from the superintendent job.

ABC11 reached out to several school board members Friday evening. The board members either didn't return our calls or wouldn't talk about it.

A Republican majority school board appointed Tata at the end of 2010 to implement a new assignment plan, which basically dismantled a ten-year old diversity plan.

The new plan has been the source of controversy and widespread complaints from parents and even board members. The most recent problem involved a busing debacle involving school buses that either showed up late or didn't show up at all.

However, Hilburn parents have seen their half-vacant classrooms filled and their school experience enriched under Tata.

The PTA's letter says, "Because of his support - his direct actions - we have been given the chance not just to succeed, but to truly flourish. And we are just getting started! Now is the time to show your support for him."

"He is someone who has taken action and kept his promises and because of that we support him and the entire community supports him," said Cassetta. "So, it's important to know this isn't just a Hilburn campaign. A family at Brier Creek let us know about this. There are families at Sycamore Creek, at Leesville and all the other schools in our district that are behind him as part of this campaign."

The school board's personnel meeting is scheduled just after noon on Monday.

Under state law, personnel matters are confidential.
